I had my first huge shock yesterday: I need to start paying electric bills and internet bills and rent come August.
This is happening to a lot of recent college grads as I type this (or is going to be happening soon as they move out of their parents’ place and into their own). With this, we all need to start learning to budget our money for more than pizza, booze, and textbooks like we did in undergrad.
But don’t worry! I found a great tool! It’s called Mint! (snazzy name, right?) I heard about this FREE service and decided to try it out. So I signed up a Mint.com and input all the information it needed. The cool part? It tracks EVERYTHING. My credit cards, bank accounts, student loans. It keeps it all in one easy-to-find place instead of having to go from one site to another all over the internet to keep track.
It even tells me when my credit card bill is due. Woah. (And gives me hints on how to raise my credit score: only use 30% of your credit, even if you do pay it off every month.)
With this handy website you can also put in what you need to pay every month. Rent, utilities, all that fun stuff. And then you can set up a monthly “stipend” for yourself for all the fun stuff (your pizza, drinks, and Starbucks). And it tracks it. I’m amazed.
From the looks of it this is going to be a tool that will truly help me transition into this portion of adulthood. As I use it for the next few months, I’ll make sure to update you all on what I think and how it’s going. But try it yourself and let me know what you think!
